Misfires result when the intended outcome of the performative utterance does not occur, is not carried out, owing to inappropriate circumstances: for example, because the conventional procedures to which performatives are always attached through their more or less ritual accomplishment were not respected, or were not in order.
Upon calling the telephone number, the recipient is greeted with "Welcome to the Bank of Blank" and then requested to enter their card number in order to resolve a pending security issue.
